Ford Invests in New Technical Training Facility, Launches Scholarship Program

Ford Philippines has formally inaugurated a new technical training facility at the Don Bosco Technical Vocational Education and Training Center (TVET) in Manila as part of its efforts to support educational development last September 7, 2016.

With a total of PhP 2,500,000 investment in the construction and set-up of the new training facility, a classroom that can hold 50 students, a vehicle lifter, 12 cabinets and toolboxes filled with specialized tools will be used by 25 deserving out-of-school youth with a full scholarship at the Don Bosco TVET.The scholarship grant entitles each scholar to attend a 15-month automotive technical course.

Ford tapped the American Chamber of Commerce Foundation to be the third-party administrator of the scholarship program and help screen scholarship candidates, monitor their performance, and find employment opportunities at Ford dealerships after they graduate from the course. The scholarship program is fully-funded by Ford and is estimated to be worth more than PhP 1,600,000.

We’ve had a fantastic partnership with Don Bosco since 2004, working together on a series of initiatives that help develop the technical skills and experience of the TVET students which leads to even better career opportunities,” said Lance Mosley, managing director, Ford Philippines.

Corporate Citizenship
The partnership with Don Bosco is one of many corporate social responsibility (CSR) projects of Ford in the Philippines, which reflect Ford Motor Company’s efforts to help strengthen communities where it operates its business.

We thank Ford for their trust in our institution and for choosing to partner with us since 2004. Ford’s thrust of going further aligns perfectly with our philosophy of helping the youth become technically competent so they, too, can go further in their lives,” said Fr. Jose Dindo Vitug, SDP, technical director, Don Bosco Manpower Skills Training Center.

Ford works closely with communities to understand what their needs are and how the Company can contribute to improving community life. This is captured in the company’s Operation Better World platform that supports CSR-related initiatives globally to deliver long-term, tangible benefits to local communities.

Ford has also institutionalized the Global Week of Caring every September to actively engage employees to devote their time to CSR-related activities outside the office.

In the Philippines, Ford CSR programs are focused on three areas: driver safety, community building, and access to clean drinking water.

Ford’s survey revealed that PH commuting worse than it was last year

A new survey commissioned by Ford Motor Company reveals a wide range of perceptions around the state of the commute in Asia Pacific.

According to the survey, 42% of the respondents said that their commute was worse than a year ago and three in ten said it was the worst part of their day. More traffic congestion and increasingly crowded public transportation were the two most common reasons cited for the decline in quality.

On the other end of the spectrum, Vietnamese respondents were the most likely to say their commute had improved over the last year, followed by commuters in India and Indonesia. The three countries also topped the podium for the most people who said they like their commute. In Taiwan and South Korea, more than half of respondents reported no change in the quality of their commute.

Ford Smart Mobility is the company’s plan to be a leader in connectivity, mobility, autonomous vehicles, the customer experience, and data & analytics. This includes everything from Ford’s in-car connectivity solution, SYNC, to the 30 global mobility experiments that have already been undertaken to gain insight into changing consumer transportation habits and preferences.

The driving forces behind this are four global megatrends that are reshaping the world:

  • Explosive population growth
  • Expanding middle class
  • Air quality and public health concerns,
  • Changing customer attitudes and priorities

Ford Smart Mobility includes technologies already available in Ford vehicles worldwide, and long-term research projects including autonomous vehicles, flexible ownership and car-sharing models, and wearable technologies. Ford vehicles help drivers stay connected to their world more than ever before – all while keeping their hands on the wheel and eyes on the road.

Beyond in-car connectivity, Ford has the largest fleet of autonomous vehicles of any automaker, and is testing the technology across different climates in the United States, including recent industry-first tests in snowy conditions. Ford will also triple its engineering investment in its driver assist and semi-autonomous technologies over the next five years.

Many of these technologies are already available in Ford vehicles, including Adaptive Cruise Control, Active Park Assist, Lane-Departure Warning and Lane-Keeping Aid, and Blind Spot Information System.

Ford Smart Mobility is about ensuring the freedom of mobility for people all over the world,” said Larsen. “That means thinking about the needs of tomorrow, and working to make a smarter, more efficient future a reality for everyone.”

The Ford Mustang is World’s Best-Selling Two-Door Sports Coupe

According to company analysis of the most recent registration data from IHS Automotive, Ford sold around 110,000 units of Mustang Coupes globally in 2015 – topping all other sports coupe competitors. Despite limited availability in key markets like China and United Kingdom, Ford sold around 30,000 Mustang Convertibles, for total nameplate sales of 141,868 vehicles – making Mustang far and away the best-selling two-door sports car in the world.

Global data for 2015 suggests Mustang has room to grow overseas this year as many markets begin to take delivery of their full allotment. “Global markets have responded in a huge way. Ford Mustang was the only sports coupe in the world with more than 100,000 units registered last year”, said Erich Merkle, Ford sales analyst.

Merkle revealed that global customers are most interested in V8-equipped Mustangs. “While much of the growth in Mustang demand in the United States has come from coastal markets – especially Southern California – and millennials opting for the 2.3-liter EcoBoost® engine, buyers in other countries prefer the V8. That unmistakable V8 warble is a hot commodity outside the U.S.

FORD MUSTANG

Europe, Middle East and Africa Market
To date, more than 16,600 customers in Europe have ordered a Ford Mustang, which went on sale there last summer. Shipments from Flat Rock Assembly Plant, exclusive production home to Mustang, began in the latter half of 2015. Of the 13,000 sold last year, 4,700 are now in customer hands.

Several significant markets, including United Kingdom, began selling Mustang in the fourth quarter. Total sales there top 3,500 cars, with the first 1,000 pony cars delivered to customers in March.

In Germany, Mustang was the best-selling sports coupe in March, according to data published by German Federal Motor Transport Authority, KBA. Despite relatively high gas prices, the 5.0-liter V8 is the No. 1 engine choice in Germany. The country also has the highest international take-rate for the convertible model, with one in three sales.

Mustang was the best-selling sports coupe last month in France, according to data from the Association Auxilliaire de l’Automobile. Ford sold 339 Mustangs in France in first-quarter 2016.

Incremental sales in South Africa, Cyprus and Malta are helping boost Mustang volume.

EcoBoost, V8 pony cars are big in Asia
In fourth-quarter 2015, Mustang was the best-selling sports coupe in China as exports made their way to dealerships in volume, according to IHS registration data. Buyers in China favor EcoBoost versions.

In its first three months on sale in Australia, Mustang ranks as the best-selling sports coupe. Demand is so strong, the pony car was initially sold out through 2017, but an additional 2,000 Mustangs are slated to ship Down Under by the end of this year.

More than 90 percent of buyers in Australia and New Zealand are opting for the V8 version.

Mustang

Mustang maintains leadership in North America
In March, Mustang sales of 12,563 cars in the United States outperformed sales of 12,248 for the new Chevrolet Camaro and Dodge Challenger combined, according to published figures. Mustang was the best-selling sports coupe in the U.S. for all of 2015 and through the first quarter of 2016, according to industry-reported numbers.

In Canada, Mustang sales leadership is nothing new; it has outsold Camaro every year since 1985, according to data from the Canadian Vehicle Manufacturers Association. Ford has the best-selling sports coupe in Canada.

And in Mexico, Mustang was the best-selling sports coupe last year, according to IHS registration data. Mustang sales were up 176 percent in Mexico in 2015 versus 2014.

You may be ruining your car’s paint WITHOUT even knowing it.

Your daily routine may be damaging your car’s paint job without you even realizing it.

Innocent everyday happenings like accidentally spilled fuel, cheeky finger writings or annoying bird droppings can leave long-lasting stains and scratches on the surface of your car or, even worse, cause corrosion.

Richard Burt, chief engineer, Vehicle Operations Manufacturing Engineering, has worked for Ford Paint since 1994 and leads the team that engineers the paint used on Ford vehicles in Asia Pacific. According to him, “There are so many things that happen every day that can damage the paint on your car, which many people are not aware of.”

Here are some of the ways you may be ruining your car’s paint – and tips from Richard Burt on how to avoid them:

1. Splattered bugs

Splattered Bugs

Bugs might be tiny but can do actual damage to the paint on your car. Insects are surprisingly acidic, and if they are not properly cleaned off the surface of your car, they can actually etch into the paint.

Tip: Don’t put off cleaning splattered bugs from your car for too long — as time goes on, they become more difficult to remove. If you act quickly, all it takes is a little bit of bug and tar remover, a soft wash cloth and some elbow grease.

2. Spilled fuel

Gas

Though most people want to make sure they get their every cent’s worth when topping up their gas tank, filling it to the brim actually increases the chance of having gas overflow and spill onto your car. If left alone and not quickly wiped away, the spilled fuel can seep into the top coat of the paint causing it to lose its shine, and leaving a stain on your car’s finish that is very difficult to remove.

Tip: To avoid leaving a brown fuel-colored blemish around the gas tank cap on your car, if you dribble gas down the side of your car, try to clean it as soon as possible with a fine microfiber cloth. It doesn’t hurt to use a little instant detailer as well.

3. Bird droppings

Bird Poop

Not only are bird droppings ugly, they can actually do some serious damage to your car’s paint job. With a diet full of berries, seeds and even bits of gravel, these acidic and grainy droppings can stain, dull and scratch your paint, and take the gloss off if left lingering on your car too long.

Tip: Spray a bit of wash solution onto the affected areas and use a soft microfiber cloth to gently wipe away the droppings. Use a lifting motion to avoid dragging any grit across the paint.

4. Stone chips

stones

Loose stones, pebbles and stone chips are everywhere on the road. These tiny pieces are kicked up from the ground and peck at the sides your car. This can chip the top paint coat and sometimes even go all the way down to the lower layers of paint, exposing them to weathering they are not equipped to handle.

Tip: It’s best to treat these chips as soon as possible to prevent the affected spots from rusting. Ford’s 3-wet paint technology uses high-solid paint chemistry, which means you get a better, denser and stronger bond between elements in the paint, resulting in a harder, stronger and more scratch-, chip- and etch-resistant surface.

5. Fingerprints

fingermark

We’ve all used our fingers to write a funny message or draw a goofy doodle onto a dirty car (or two) before. Little did we know that these innocent acts of jest, though oddly satisfying, can ruin the paint on a car. Dragging your fingers across the paint acts like sandpaper, grinding the dirt and debris into the paint and leaving wiry markings that will last long after the dirt is gone.

Tip: The easiest way to avoid this is not to do it, but it’s still bound to happen. You can use a duster to wipe down your car every day to prevent accidental sanding, or if you need to remove small scratches, you can use a little bit of polish – just remember to wash your car before polishing.

6. Ash

Ash on car

Murky air can leave behind a layer of ash and soot on your car. Though many people would be immediately inclined to wash this away with some water, mixing water with ash can actually create powerful alkalis that can ruin your car’s finish.

Tip: The easiest way to avoid this is to keep your car covered if you leave it parked outside. To get the ash off, gently dust the ash away with a car duster.

7. Dirty washing accessories

Car Wash

Regardless of how many times you wash your car, if you are working with dirty wash accessories, you can cause permanent damage to the paint. Even if you are cleaning with the softest and finest microfiber cloth or sponge, the moment it drops on the ground it will pick up microscopic bits of grit, sand and dirt, which can’t be entirely washed off. If you continue to wash your car with dirty accessories, you might be left with wiry swirls and scratches on your car.

Tip: If your washing cloth or sponge drops onto the floor, just grab a new one. It’s always useful to keep a spare cloth or two beside you to avoid scratching your car with dirty accessories, and having to detail or repaint it. If you can take your car to a get a touchless wash, that’s even better: A touchless wash removes any chance of microscopic pieces of dirt and grit from coming in contact with your car.

To ensure the quality and durability of its paint, Ford has a wide range of tests that check everything from a paint’s chip- and scratch-resistance to how well it can maintain its gloss and color over time.

Some of these include the Mar Resistance test, which measures gloss retention, the Weathering Florida Accelerated test, which assesses the long-term resistance of the paint system to environmental exposure, and the Stone Chip Resistance test, which measures how well the paint can withstand the impact of stone chips hitting its surface continuously. These tests guarantee that all parts of Ford’s paint system are up to the Ford standard, and result in a stronger, harder and more resilient finish on Ford vehicles.
