Uber’s #POOLSquad made a positive impact on the road and the environment

Traffic congestion is an everyday reality – anytime, anywhere, for everyone in Manila. With the help of uberPOOL, an innovative product that enables people going in the same direction at the same time to share the journey, Uber is reinventing #SquadGoals and inviting Filipinos to (car)pool together to save fuel, cut emissions and reduce kilometers driven on the road.

Through the #POOLSquad competition, in just three weeks, participating teams saved 703,000 kilometers and 33,000 liters of fuel and even reduced greenhouse gas emissions by 77 metric tons.

With celebrities, athletes, and social influencers as captains of the three squads, each team rallied their followers to use uberPOOL and help get more Filipinos into fewer cars. Riders could choose the squad they wanted to belong to:

UberPoolSquad

Today Uber confirmed the winner of the #POOLSquad initiative – Squad MOVE – with the most kilometers saved by sharing rides on uberPOOL. Its top 50 riders were awarded up to 50 free uberPOOL rides. At the same time, Uber awarded 20 riders, regardless of squad, up to P10,000 worth of Uber credits for having the most number of rides taken during the competition’s duration. Top riders took almost 60 uberPOOL trips over the course of the 21-day campaign.

#POOLSquad has proven that uberPOOL can significantly help in reducing traffic congestion in Metro Manila while dramatically reducing every riders carbon footprint,” said Uber Philippines General Manager, Laurence Cua. “We hope that more riders join us in this ridesharing revolution by requesting an uberPOOL ride. Together we can change our roads by getting more people into fewer cars.

Here’s how you can help reduce Manila traffic.

Everyday, Filipinos living in the metro experience heavy traffic. Time wasted with it is definitely money wasted—We lose 3 billion pesos a day.

The Philippines is the fastest booming country in Asia which is why in 2015, the total motor vehicles in Metro Manila alone has already peaked to 2.5 million. That’s a lot of cars for the city with only 1,032 kilometers of roads or 3.5% of the total 39,370 kilometers of roads nationwide. The ratio is one kilometer of road is to 424 vehicles. Not only it has a bad effect on the roads, but also to our environment because it contributes 85% of air pollution in the city.

We’re in constant research on the solutions that may help decrease the bad traffic but one of it is already in your hands—through your smart phone. Just this June, Uber, a technology platform that make cities more accessible by connecting riders to drivers with just a tap, launched uberPOOL in Metro Manila.

Basically, it’s a carpool that pairs you up with another rider from the same area, heading the same direction, at the same time and saves you up to 25% less on your fare. In just two months, this ride-sharing option has cut the number of kilometers driven by 578,000 or to 27,200 liters of fuel and 64,000 kilograms of carbon dioxide.

It is a win-win situation because it helps reduce emissions, a convenient and safe way for transportation and helps lessen cars in the city. There’s an ongoing promo of uberPOOL named “#POOLSquad” in which a rider can win up to Php10,000 Uber credits. Simply join a squad and the squad who has the most saved trips will win. At the end of the day, whichever squad wins, Manila wins.

Today, the CEO and co-founder of Uber, Travis Kalanick, shared his story in the digital edition of Philippine Daily Inquirer. Read more – Pooling: more people in fewer cars

Have you tried uberPOOL yet?

Basically, it’s the Uber’s carpool offering which was launched here in the Philippines last June of this year. Through this, riders can save up to 25% of their uberX fare, which is one of Uber’s cheapest services.

How does it work?
People going in the same direction or near with each other and requested an Uber have the opportunity to share both the ride and fare through uberPOOL. Ultimately focused on the bigger picture, Uber makes it possible for uberPOOL riders to be part of their mission to cut congestion and pollution in Manila at a lower cost. With a simple press of a button, riders can get an affordable ride across town within minutes at any time of day or night. You can only use uberPOOL through uberX and this can be used either you pay cash or credit card.

What’s the difference of uberPOOL with other Uber services?
The fare is fixed and of course, since it’s a carpool, you may have 2-3 passengers with you throughout the trip.

What if I didn’t have any other passengers with me?
It is alright. You will still pay the fixed price you saw on the process of your booking.

Is it safe?
Of course, it is. Everyone in Uber undergoes the extensive screening process.

How to book an uberPOOL?

1. Open the Uber app.

2. Enter your pick-up location and destination and make sure at the bottom, you chose uberX.

3. Once you have entered your pick-up location and destination, Uber then will retrieve the price. On the left part, you can see the option “uberPOOL” with the fixed price you will pay then request shared car.

uberpool

4. You’ll see your driver’s detail straight away–name, photo and the details of the car.

5. It will then match you with another passenger near your area who also requested for the uberPOOL. The passenger will either be in the car at the start of your trip, in which case you’ll see their name in advance or your driver will pick them up along the way, in which case Uber will notify you via the app.

6. At the end of the trip, you’ll pay just like a normal trip and receive an electronic receipt.

The hassle and stress caused by heavy traffic has always been our concern. At Uber, we’ve made it our mission to decongest Manila through affordable, safe, convenient, and shareable rides,” said Laurence Cua, Uber Philippines General Manager. “By using uberPOOL, riders are not only able to secure a more affordable trip, but they are also able to help decrease traffic congestion in the metro.

Just 40 days since its launch here in Metro Manila, there has been more than 73,000 unique riders who used uberPOOL. By sharing a ride, these riders were able to save more than 578,000 kilometers and 27,200 liters of fuel. To add to this, uberPOOL helped reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 64,000 kilograms by getting more people in fewer cars. To further understand how it works:

Our verdict:
uberPOOL is convenient and safe. It is perfect for those people who wants to arrive at their destination without the hassle and who wants to save money.  If you’re just going to the mall or to have a leisure time, then this is the perfect option for your commute! If you have any urgent matters and you want to try uberPOOL, make sure to book 30 minutes or an hour before. Or you can always book other Uber services like uberX which you’re the only passenger or Black car.

You can also meet new friends with uberPOOL just like what happened to our news editor, Sabina Cruz, who personally uses uberPOOL and met a woman who’s a die-hard fan of James Deakin. #WhyIUber

There’s a new way to commute in town: uberPOOL

Traffic has become a part of our daily lives that it feels so normal now but did you know that we spend 1,000 hours or 42 days per year sitting in traffic? According to the Japan International Cooperation Agency or JICA, traffic costs us Php 2.4 Billion a day and it causes 4.7 million tons of greenhouse gases emitted by vehicles. Just last year alone, 300,000 new cars hit the streets of our country and it is inevitable because of our booming economy.

With all these results, Uber Manila is once again giving the people a solution to save time, effort and money through their new service called uberPOOL and this will start on June 15, 2016.

uberPOOL is very simple. You share a ride with another person who happens to be requesting a ride along a similar route at the same time. Sharing a ride means sharing the fare and sharing a ride means reducing CO2 emmissions!

How uberPOOL works:

UBER LOGO

1. Open the Uber app.

2. Choose the uberPOOL option and enter your destination then request ride. You’ll see your driver’s detail straight away–name, photo and the details of the car.

3. uberPOOL will then match you with another passenger heading in the same direction. The passenger will either be in the car at the start of your trip, in which case you’ll see their name in advance or your driver will pick them up along the way, in which case Uber will notify you via the app.

4. At the end of the trip, you’ll pay just like a normal trip and receive an electronic receipt.

What are the benefits to the driver, rider and environment?

For the driver, less idle time between paying trips for drivers. It means more demand overall because as the cost of a trip falls, more people use the service which means more rides for drivers. The goal is every minute spent on the road is utilized.

For the rider, the fare is more affordable than uberX. It is discounted 25% –whether Uber pairs you up with another passenger or not.

For the environment, the uberPOOL will lessen the congestion in Metro Manila. Fewer cars on the road means a smaller environment footprint and reduced CO2 emmissions..

What kind of vehicles to be used on uberPOOL?

The vehicles are the same as the one used in uberX in which the drivers have undergone extensive screening process.

Is it safe?

Of course, it is. Everyone undergoes the extensive screening process.

Is the fare fixed?

A rider will see his or her fare at the start. It is guaranteed upfront.

Is there additional requirements for the driver?

There is no additional requirements needed.

What is the difference between uberPOOL and uberHOP?
uberHOP has fixed routes, limited service and limited time while uberPOOL is dynamic, not point-to-point.

Is the uberPOOL a proven model?

uberPOOL was launched in San Francisco in September 2014 and has expanded to 40 cities around the world including Austin, Bangalore, Boston, Chengdu, Chicago, Guangzhou, Hangzhou, Jakarta, London, Los Angeles, Mexico City, Miami, New York City, Paris, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Shanghai, Shengzen, Toronto and Washington D.C. Over 100,000 people are taking pooled trips every week.

So now there’s four services you can choose at Uber: uberBlack, uberX, uberHop and uberPOOL. Happy riding!

uberHOP expands pickup points to Quezon City during rush hour

MANILA, Philippines — Uber, the world’s leading ridesharing application, introduces new routes for its uberHOP service to serve commuters in Quezon City that promises to help commuters save time while ensuring that their trip is safe and comfortable.

uberHOP, launched in the country in January 2016, is an option that enables multiple people heading in the same direction to share a ride during peak hours. Its goal is to reduce traffic congestion and improve urban mobility, by putting more people in fewer cars.

Riders who travel between QC to Makati or Bonifacio Global City (BGC) in Taguig can now commute conveniently and affordably by booking an uberHOP ride with just a few taps on their smartphones.

uberHOP will pick up passengers from TriNoma Mall in Quezon City and drop them off at Tower One, Ayala Avenue in Makati or Net Quad in 31st Street, BGC. A one way fare will cost P120 to both destinations and a vehicle will be available on-demand. To book an uberHOP, simply open the Uber app and choose the uberHOP option. From there, select from predetermined routes indicated in the app and head to the nearest pickup location.

According to Laurence Cua, Uber Philippines General Manager, the trips from TriNoma to the central business districts of Makati and BGC are intentionally scheduled during the peak traffic hours of 6:30AM to 8:30AM, when demand for transportation is greatest. “We’re taking steps to make sure that commuters get reliable and convenient rides every morning and uberHOP has been very well received by the people of Metro Manila, with many asking for more routes. So after our recent addition of  routes in Ortigas, we are excited to bring uberHOP to the commuters of Quezon City.”

On requesting an Uber, the user’s final destination will be autofilled on the driver’s app once the trip starts, making the entire experience seamless. The next phase of integration will involve notifying the user to request for an Uber, an hour prior to the appointment.

We work relentlessly towards providing a simplified healthcare experience that reduces consumer stress and anxiety at every level. We realized that transportation issues often bring additional stress to a doctor’s visit – having to drive through traffic, then hunt for parking – all while you or your loved one is sitting in the car feeling ill is a terrible experience. There are also many patients who may not be able to drive themselves to a doctor at all. Our goal with this partnership is to completely remove this anxiety by integrating with Uber’s incredible experience and bringing that to our consumers.” said Shashank ND, Founder & CEO, Practo

The partnership today is in four markets – India, Indonesia, Philippines and Singapore and will soon expand to cover more countries as Practo and Uber continue their global expansion at a rapid pace.

“At Uber, our mission is to bring safe, convenient and reliable rides at the push of a button to everyone, everywhere. We are delighted to partner with Practo to provide people with convenient access to quality healthcare services. The technology integration through this partnership reflects our common commitment to create seamless experience for all our users,” said Mike Brown, Regional General Manager, Southeast Asia and Australia, New Zealand.
