Segway: An Eco-Friendly Personal Transportation

Have you seen security guards or MMDA Traffic Constables using electronic transportations? Have you seen people from show business, sneaker people, basketball players rolling with a 2-wheel device on their feet? Or have you seen the movie, Paul Blart Mall Cop?

A booming personal transportation nowadays is what we call a “Segway.” It has two kinds: with handle or without the handle, but with the same purpose — convenient and reliable mobilization.

Segway PT or the Segway Personal Transporter is a two-wheeled electric vehicle with a handle invented by Dean Kamen which was first introduced in 2001 in New York City. It came from the word, “segue” which means smooth transition. This amazing high-tech device uses a gyroscopic sensors and accelerometer-based levelling sensors so it is a self-balancing device. The rider controls the device by using his/her weight to move forward or backward, and can also turn and steer sideways with the use of the handle. This device uses a detachable wireless info key and it can reach a speed of 12.5 miles per hour or 20.1 km/h.

THE NAVIGATOR: AN E-ADVENTURE TO THE PAST

There are many places in Manila that remains to be historically beautiful especially the Intramuros. This famous city landmark also known as the walled city was a component realm of the Spanish Empire back in 16th century. Total land area of this city is 67 hectares which remained the traces of war. Today, it is still stunningly standing and attracts local and foreign tourists.

Simply Moving Philippines, Inc. in partnership with the Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority (TIEZA) launched the ecotourism program, The Navigator.

The Navigator provides visitors and tourists a fun and unique way to view the historical and scenic wonders of Manila. The experience begins at Club Intramuros Golf Course specifically at the Clubhouse for the families of the golfers and the students from the nearby colleges and other guests who wish to have a little adventure without making them easily tired. Guided segway tours for groups are 1-9 guests accompanied by a tour guide.

The tour will have a 15 x 2 segway out on tour including two tour guides in front and at the end of the line. All riders will have their own segway with 5-8 feet of space between each other. The tour guides uses hand signals to forewarn guest riders of objects on the road like poles, fire hydrants, cracked/pothole surfaces, branches/low overhead to ensure each and everyone’s safety.

The tour will be around the 18 holes of golf course giving guest riders information about the different points of interests that can be seen and stops will be taken along the way out of pedestrian traffic for photos with rests at scenic spots where Segways are allowed and back to the bike path or walkway towards the original destination. Routes heading back will be determined based on pedestrian traffic and time left in the tour.
